About the view

Pyramid of the Sun

The view is taken from ground level, looking directly at the Pyramid of the Sun from across the open plain at dusk. Spiked desert plants crowd the foreground in deep blue-green, and a pale cactus catches the last warm glow at center frame, drawing the eye upward toward the massive stepped form rising behind it. The pyramid itself falls into shadow, its terraced faces rendered in deep brown and charcoal, while the sky behind it melts from a burnt amber and coral at the horizon into a moody indigo overhead. The composition is spare and monumental — warm earth below, cool dark above, and that enormous ancient silhouette holding steady between them. Teotihuacan has rarely looked more still or more vast.

The history & when to go

The Pyramid of the Sun is one of the largest structures built in the ancient Americas, rising to roughly 65 meters and stretching more than 200 meters along each side of its base. It was constructed in the early centuries of the first millennium and stood at the center of a city that, at its peak, may have housed over 100,000 people. The pyramid's western face aligns with the setting sun on specific days of the year, reflecting the deep astronomical knowledge of Teotihuacan's builders, whose identity remains a subject of ongoing study.

The twilight hour shown here — that brief window after sunset when color floods the horizon — is one of the most rewarding times to visit the site in person.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Teotihuacan finds a home on your wall.
