About the view

Palace of Quetzalpapalotl Courtyard

The view looks across an open courtyard at Teotihuacan, where afternoon sun falls hard and flat against warm stone columns and a long, crenellated roofline. The upper frieze runs the full width of the scene in deep terracotta red, its repeating carved motifs catching the light in shallow relief before giving way to a row of square merlons silhouetted against a pale blue sky. Below, square pillars step forward in softer honey tones, each face bearing carved panels — feathered, curving forms pressed into the warm stone — with small dark circular inlays that punctuate the surface like eyes. Diagonal shadows slice across the paved floor, pulling the eye through the colonnaded space and deepening the sense of enclosure.

The history & when to go

The Palace of Quetzalpapalotl is one of the most extensively restored residential and ceremonial complexes at Teotihuacan. Scholars believe it served as a residence for high-ranking individuals within the city's elite. The distinctive columns decorated with figures traditionally identified as the hybrid quetzal-butterfly figure are among the most recognized examples of Teotihuacan's artistic tradition, and the palace's courtyard layout reflects the carefully ordered design that characterizes the wider site.

The courtyard reads most dramatically in the dry season, roughly November through April, when clear skies deepen the contrast between the red frieze and pale stone below.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Teotihuacan finds a home on your wall.
