About the view

Tianyuan Temple Pagoda Cherry Blossoms

A multi-tiered pagoda rises at the center of the scene, its warm terracotta rooflines fanning outward at each level against a pale, hazy blue sky. The view looks up toward Tianyuan Temple from among the blossoming trees that crowd the foreground, their branches loaded with clusters of soft pink flowers that nearly swallow the composition whole. Rounded arched galleries wrap each story of the tower in cream and gold, and rolling green hills fade gently into the distance behind it. The light feels like midmorning in early spring — even and generous, casting no hard shadows, letting the blush pinks and burnt oranges hold equal weight across the canvas.

The history & when to go

Tianyuan Temple sits in the Tamsui District on the outskirts of Taipei, perched in the hills above the surrounding valley. The temple is dedicated to the Jade Emperor, the highest deity in the Taoist pantheon, and draws visitors year-round for both religious observance and the sweeping views from its grounds. Each late winter and early spring, the surrounding hillside fills with flowering trees that turn the approach to the pagoda into one of the most photographed scenes in northern Taiwan.

For the full effect in person, late January through late March offers the best chance of catching the blossoms near their peak alongside clear skies over the hills.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Taipei finds a home on your wall.
