About the view

Taipei City Skyline Sunset

Seen from a forested hillside at dusk, this view of the Taipei City skyline captures the exact moment the sky and the streets compete for brilliance. Taipei 101 rises at the center, its tapered silhouette and lit spire cutting into a sky layered with deep rose, lavender, and soft amber — clouds trailing across the upper canvas in long, feathered sweeps. Below, the city's low ridgeline of dark treetops gives way to a dense grid of towers, their amber streetlights and colored rooftop signs beginning to bloom against the fading light. Mountains dissolve into the hazy horizon behind the tower, grounding the whole scene in its island geography.

The history & when to go

Taipei 101 held the title of the world's tallest building from its completion in 2004 until 2009. Standing in the Xinyi district, the tower was designed with a segmented form inspired by traditional East Asian architecture, and it incorporates one of the world's largest tuned mass dampers to counteract wind and seismic movement. It remains a symbol of Taiwan's economic confidence and engineering ambition, and continues to serve as the focal point of the city's skyline.

The hillside vantage that inspired this view is at its most rewarding in the cooler months between October and February, when clearer skies keep the distant mountains visible long into dusk.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Taipei finds a home on your wall.
