About the view

Jiufen Old Street Lanterns

A string of glowing red lanterns arcs across the narrow lane of Jiufen Old Street, drawing the eye deep into the scene where warm amber light bleeds into a cool, moody blue at the far end of the alley. The view is taken from within the crowd, low and close, so the lanterns loom large overhead — round, luminous, almost weightless against the dark timber facades pressing in on either side. Silhouetted figures move through the middle distance, their shapes dissolving into the glow, while flashes of crimson and tangerine reflect off every surface around them. The composition pulls you forward, as though the next step down that lane is yours to take.

The history & when to go

Jiufen prospered during a gold rush that began in the late nineteenth century and drew miners and merchants to this steep hillside above Taiwan's northeastern coast. After the gold ran out, the town quieted for decades before its winding stairways and heritage teahouses drew new attention. Its profile rose further when it became associated with a celebrated 1989 Taiwanese film, and later drew international admirers drawn by its atmospheric architecture and evening lantern light.

The lanterns are lit every evening, but arriving just after dusk — when the last blue of the sky still shows above the rooftops — gives the scene exactly the contrast captured here.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Taipei finds a home on your wall.
