About the view

Split Riva Harbour Waterfront

Three small boats rest side by side in the calm harbour of Split, their bold hulls — one a deep cherry red, one sky blue with white trim, another red-trimmed and cream — reflected in water that shifts between teal and soft rose. The view is taken from the quayside, looking across the still harbour toward the Riva waterfront, where a row of tall palms lines the promenade and warm-stoned buildings glow in the early light. A coil of rope sits on the dock edge in the foreground, grounding the scene in the everyday life of a working harbour. Above the rooftops, a slender bell tower rises into a blush-pink sky, the whole city mirrored almost perfectly in the glassy water below.

The history & when to go

The Riva is Split's long seafront promenade, stretching along the southern edge of Diocletian's Palace, the vast late-Roman complex that has been continuously inhabited for centuries. The palace was built around the turn of the fourth century as a retirement residence for the Roman Emperor Diocletian, and over the centuries its walls were absorbed into the fabric of the living city. The area was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.

Early morning and the golden hour before sunset bring the harbour's colours to life most vividly, when the water is calm and the city's warm tones deepen against a pale Adriatic sky.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Split finds a home on your wall.
