About the view

Split Old Town Harbour

The view sweeps down from the hillside above Split Old Town, terracotta rooftops rippling forward in waves of amber and burnt copper. Tall palms line the waterfront promenade, their deep green threading between the warm tones of the old city and the vivid turquoise of the harbour below. A slender bell tower rises cleanly through the middle distance, and beyond it the water opens into the broader Adriatic, the Dalmatian mountains dissolving in soft blue-grey along the horizon. Tree branches frame the upper corner, giving the whole panorama the feeling of a discovered lookout.

The history & when to go

Diocletian's Palace, the ancient Roman complex at the heart of Split, was built as a retirement residence for Emperor Diocletian around the late third and early fourth centuries AD. Over time, people moved into and around the palace walls, and the city grew organically from those structures over the following centuries. The palace complex is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most completely preserved examples of late Roman architecture in the world — and it remains a living neighbourhood to this day.

Morning light fires the rooftops to their deepest copper and the harbour water catches a clarity that makes this elevated view above the old town especially worth the climb.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Split finds a home on your wall.
