About the view

Porta Venere Twin Towers

The view opens at street level, looking straight toward Porta Venere and its pair of tall, warm-toned towers rising against a vivid Umbrian sky. Two slender, dark-green trees frame the left side, their vertical lines echoing the towers and drawing the eye upward. Between the towers, a broad arched gateway — pale and sun-bleached against the deeper amber of the masonry above — anchors the center of the scene. Beyond it, the land falls away into a sweeping valley patchwork of greens and golds, with a gentle mountain ridge softening the horizon. The light is full and midday-bright, casting sharp shadows across the paving and warming every surface to honey and ochre. Puffs of white cloud drift across the deep blue above, completing a composition that feels both monumental and deeply livable.

The history & when to go

Porta Venere is one of Spello's Roman gates, dating to the Augustan period and considered among the best-preserved examples of Roman town planning in Umbria. The twin towers that flank it were added during the medieval period and have defined the town's silhouette ever since. The gate once formed part of the Roman walls enclosing the ancient settlement of Hispellum.

Late spring and early summer bring the clearest light and the fullest green to the valley beyond the gate, making that time of year especially rewarding for seeing this view in person.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Spello finds a home on your wall.
