About the view

Spello Infiorata Flower Carpet Courtyard

A quiet Umbrian courtyard fills the scene, viewed from ground level at the heart of Spello's Infiorata. The entire foreground blazes with a vast flower-petal carpet — bold reds and crimsons fanning outward in medallion patterns, shot through with bursts of yellow and soft grey — radiating from a warm stone fountain at its center. Climbing green vines soften the rose-toned walls that close in on either side, and a wide stone staircase rises at the right, leading to an arched doorway above. The light is midday bright, casting short shadows and making the petals glow almost incandescent against the ancient facades.

The history & when to go

The Infiorata di Spello is one of Umbria's most celebrated Corpus Christi traditions, held each year on the Sunday of that feast. Residents spend the night before laying elaborate pictorial carpets made entirely from flower petals directly onto the paving stones of the town's streets. The designs frequently include religious imagery alongside geometric and decorative motifs, each neighborhood competing to outdo the last in intricacy and scale. The tradition has deep roots in Italian Corpus Christi celebrations but Spello's version has earned particular renown across the country.

The carpets are at their most vivid in the morning hours before the procession begins, when the petals are still fresh and the color is at its most intense.

Each year in Spello, medieval stone courtyards vanish beneath vast carpets of flower petals arranged into dazzling geometric designs for the Infiorata festival. This watercolor study captures the blazing reds, golds, and oranges of those ephemeral mosaics glowing against warm terracotta walls and sun-drenched stone.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Spello finds a home on your wall.
