About the view

Sossusvlei Sand Dunes Balloon

Seen from the air at first light, the Sossusvlei dunes unroll beneath a balloon basket in sweeping curves of burnt orange and deep amber, their crests catching the low sun while the valleys between them pool into rich shadow. A single hot-air balloon — striped in gold, rust, and dark teal — hangs mid-frame against a pale lemon sky, impossibly small above the scale of the landscape. The ridgelines below fan outward like the spines of some vast sleeping creature, each edge razor-sharp where sunlight meets shade, the whole scene dissolving into a haze of ochre and violet at the horizon.

The history & when to go

Sossusvlei lies within Namib-Naukluft National Park, one of the largest protected areas in Africa. The dunes here are among the tallest in the world, shaped over millions of years by wind. The white clay pans at their feet flood briefly after rare rains. Balloon flights over the area became one of the region's signature experiences, offering a vantage point from which the full geometry of the dune field becomes legible.

The earliest morning departures, timed to catch the dunes in that first raking light, give the sharpest contrast between the lit crests and their long dark shadows.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Sossusvlei finds a home on your wall.
