About the view

Deadvlei Dead Camelthorn Trees

A colossal dune rises in a long, sweeping arc across the upper half of the scene, its face burning in deep orange and rust beneath a flat, cloudless blue sky. The view is level with the clay pan floor, which stretches pale and chalky white across the foreground, almost luminous against the fiery wall of sand behind it. Standing between those two extremes, a loose cluster of bare, dark trees reaches upward with gnarled, branching arms — stark silhouettes that look almost drawn against the warm glow of the dune. The composition is startlingly simple: three horizontal bands of white, amber-red and blue, interrupted only by those reaching figures. The light feels high and dry, the shadows nearly absent, every edge sharp.

The history & when to go

Deadvlei sits within Namib-Naukluft National Park in Namibia, one of the largest protected areas on the African continent. The clay pan formed when the nearby river flooded and allowed trees to grow, then was blocked by encroaching dunes, cutting off the water supply. Without moisture the trees could not decompose, and they have remained standing for centuries, preserved by the extreme aridity. The surrounding dunes are among the highest in the world, their intense color the result of iron oxide accumulating over vast spans of time.

The contrast between the pale pan and the glowing dunes is most dramatic in the clear, windless hours of early morning, when the light rakes low across the scene and the colors are at their most vivid.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Sossusvlei finds a home on your wall.
