About the view

Savannah Gas Lamp Street

A warm rain has just passed through Savannah, and the herringbone brick sidewalk still holds the glow of every gas lamp along the block. The view looks down a long, straight corridor of draping tree canopy — heavy, trailing tendrils hanging low in the humid dark — while a row of tall townhouses lines the right side of the composition, their amber windows and iron-railed stoops anchoring the scene in deep auburn and chestnut. A single lamp post stands close and bright at center, its flame-colored light pooling on the wet bricks beneath it, and a chain of smaller halos recedes into the blue-grey mist beyond. The palette is almost entirely built from that tension: cool teal darkness above, warm copper and gold below, the two halves held together by the soft shimmer of reflection.

The history & when to go

Gas lamps have been part of Savannah's streets since the nineteenth century. The lamps are closely tied to Savannah's reputation as one of the best-preserved historic urban landscapes in the United States, and their warm flicker is considered central to the character of the old district's streets and squares.

Late spring and early autumn bring the most atmospheric evenings, when passing showers leave the bricks glistening and the air is warm enough to walk slowly and take it all in.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Savannah finds a home on your wall.
