About the view

Cathedral of St. John the Baptist

Two pale towers rise against a cloudless afternoon sky, their verdigris spires pulling the eye upward before releasing it into open blue. The view looks straight at the facade of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Savannah, framed on the upper left by the spreading canopy of a broad-limbed tree, its fresh spring leaves catching the light in citrus greens and gold. A sweep of soft pink blossoms fills the lower left corner, vivid against a lawn of deep emerald, and a trimmed hedge runs along the base of the facade like a clean horizon line. The warm stone of the front elevation glows in full midday sun, its pointed arches, rose window, and clustered pinnacles casting crisp shadows that give the composition its pleasing sense of depth and order.

The history & when to go

The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist is the oldest Roman Catholic church in Georgia. The current Gothic Revival structure was completed in the late nineteenth century. A fire in 1898 destroyed the cathedral's interior and most of the structure, leaving only the exterior walls and two spires standing, and the cathedral was rebuilt and rededicated in 1900. It has served as the mother church of the Diocese of Savannah ever since, drawing visitors as much for its architecture as for its long place in the spiritual and civic life of the city.

Spring is the finest season to experience this view in person, when the azaleas along Lafayette Square reach full bloom and the light holds a particular warmth through the late afternoon hours.
