About the view

Bodie Island Lighthouse Boardwalk

A boardwalk curves out of the foreground and draws the eye straight toward the Bodie Island Lighthouse, rising in bold dark and pale bands against a sky in full drama. Storm clouds billow across the upper half of the scene, yet a break of warm golden light pushes through just behind the tower, silhouetting its lantern room and casting long amber reflections along the planked path below. Tall grasses crowd both sides of the walk, their feathery heads catching that same honeyed glow, swaying in a wind you can almost feel. Two small keeper's cottages with warm red roofs nestle at the base of the tower, grounding the composition before the horizon opens to a pale sliver of sea.

The history & when to go

Bodie Island Lighthouse stands within Cape Hatteras National Seashore on North Carolina's Outer Banks, one of the longest stretches of barrier islands on the Atlantic coast. The current tower was completed in 1872 and has guided mariners away from the treacherous shoals offshore ever since. The National Park Service oversees the site today, and the lighthouse is open to climbers during warmer months, offering sweeping views across sound and sea.

Late afternoon in autumn is a particularly rewarding time to make this walk, when storm light like the kind captured here rolls in quickly off the Atlantic and the grasses reach their fullest golden color.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Savannah finds a home on your wall.
