About the view

Sankaty Head Lighthouse Nantucket

Sankaty Head Lighthouse rises from a low bluff on Nantucket's eastern edge, its bold red band cutting a sharp stripe against the white tower above and below. The scene is viewed from ground level across a sweep of bright green grass that rolls gently toward the base of the bluff, giving the composition a grounded, open-field calm. White keeper's buildings cluster to the right, their red rooftops echoing the lighthouse's signature color. Above it all, a generous cobalt sky is stacked with billowing summer clouds, and the light has that particular midday clarity you only find near open water — crisp, even, with no haze to soften the edges.

The history & when to go

Sankaty Head Lighthouse has guided mariners around Nantucket's eastern shoals since it was first lit in 1850. The light sits at one of the most historically treacherous stretches of the New England coast, where shifting sandbars have claimed countless vessels over the centuries. The lighthouse was transferred by the Coast Guard to local stewardship, and in 2007 it was moved back from the eroding bluff edge in a major preservation effort — one of the more remarkable feats of historic structure relocation on record.

Summer mornings offer the cleanest light and the richest contrast between the white tower with its red band and the blue Atlantic sky beyond.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Nantucket finds a home on your wall.
