About the view

Nantucket Main Street Cobblestones

The view looks straight down Main Street in Nantucket, from street level at the foot of the hill, just as the sun breaks the horizon behind a deep-red colonial building at the top of the rise. A tall lamp post anchors the left foreground, its lantern lit and glowing amber, while a starburst of golden light flares from between the buildings and spills across the rounded cobblestones below. Deep greens canopy the scene from both sides, broad-leafed trees catching the warm backlight and turning their edges to copper and chartreuse. Clusters of deep-red blooms crowd the base of the lamp post, and clapboard storefronts in soft grays and creams line either side of the street, their windows just beginning to catch the morning glow. The whole composition pulls the eye upward along the gentle curve of the stones toward that warm, blazing center.

The history & when to go

Main Street has been the commercial and civic heart of Nantucket since the late seventeenth century. The cobblestones themselves were laid in the nineteenth century, a practical solution to the mud and rutting that plagued a street handling the heavy traffic of a prosperous whaling port. At its peak, Nantucket was one of the world's leading whaling centers, and the wealth that trade generated shaped the broad, handsome streetscape still standing today.

Early morning in midsummer rewards visitors with this precise quality of low, raking light — the street quiet, the stones still cool, the whole island feeling briefly unhurried.

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Nantucket finds a home on your wall.
