About the view

Brant Point Lighthouse Nantucket

A narrow spit of golden shore reaches into Nantucket Harbor, and at its tip the white tower of Brant Point Lighthouse rises compact and bright against a wide, calm sky. The scene is viewed from water level, close enough that the bold red, white, and blue of an American flag draped across the tower's face fills the left side of the composition with vivid warmth. To the right, a two-masted schooner glides across deep blue water, its amber sails catching the same low, honeyed light that gilds the marsh grasses along the point. The harbor beyond stretches flat and luminous toward a low, hazy shoreline, and the whole scene breathes with the ease of a clear late-afternoon on the Atlantic.

The history & when to go

Brant Point Lighthouse holds the distinction of being the second-oldest lighthouse site in the United States, with a beacon first established here in 1746. The tower has been rebuilt and replaced numerous times over the centuries, battered by storms and fire, each version standing as a renewed commitment to guiding vessels safely into Nantucket Harbor. The current structure dates to 1901 and remains an active aid to navigation maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard. Generations of islanders and visitors have marked their arrivals and departures by its steady light.

Late summer and early fall bring the richest golden-hour color to this spot, when the angle of the sun sets both the lighthouse and the harbor water glowing.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Nantucket finds a home on your wall.
