About the view

Old Town Harbour Christ Statue Hill

A red-and-blue fishing boat sits moored in the calm harbour of San Sebastián, its hull mirrored in still water that shifts between deep teal and amber gold. The scene is viewed from water level, drawing the eye along a warm stone quay toward a row of tall, closely packed façades — creams, ochres, and flashes of sage green — their balconied faces catching the low, honeyed light of either early morning or late afternoon. Beyond the rooflines, a densely wooded hill rises steeply, its dark green canopy soft against a clear blue sky, and at its summit a pale figure stands with arms outstretched, small but unmistakable against the light.

The history & when to go

The hill overlooking the harbour is Monte Urgull, one of San Sebastián's most recognisable landmarks. The figure crowning it is the Sacred Heart of Christ statue, erected in the mid-twentieth century, and it has watched over the old town and its fishing harbour for more than seventy years. Monte Urgull itself has a long history as a fortified position, and the castle near its summit dates back several centuries. Together, the hill, the fort, and the statue form a silhouette that locals and visitors have used to orient themselves in the city for generations.

Early morning brings the warmest, most directional light to this side of the harbour, gilding the quayside façades just as the fishing boats settle into their reflections on the still water.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of San Sebastian finds a home on your wall.
