About the view

La Concha Bay Islands

From a high vantage point among wind-shaped trees, La Concha Bay opens below in one of the most breathtaking compositions the Basque coast has to offer. The view sweeps from a rounded wooded headland on the left to a smaller, darker islet sitting low in the center of the bay, with the long curve of San Sebastián's shoreline glittering amber and gold along the right edge. The sky is the true drama here — great rolling clouds billow in deep violet and bruised lavender, shot through with flame orange and scarlet where the sun has dropped behind the western hills. That fire reflects straight down into the water, turning the bay into a mirror of molten copper and teal that shifts color with every ripple.

The history & when to go

La Concha Bay is widely considered one of the most beautiful urban bays in Europe. The island visible from the shore — Santa Clara — has long been a landmark for the city, housing a lighthouse and offering refuge to seabirds and day-trippers alike. The sweeping bay and its promenade took their present, celebrated form during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when San Sebastián became a favored summer retreat for the Spanish royal family, drawing visitors who shaped much of the elegant architecture that still lines the waterfront.

Late summer and early autumn bring the most dramatic skies to this coastline, when warm Atlantic air collides with cooler evenings to produce exactly the kind of sunset captured here.

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.
