About the view

Monte Urgull Coastal Headland

A lone surfer walks the shoreline at golden hour, board tucked under one arm, face turned toward the break. The wet sand at his feet mirrors the amber sky in long, liquid streaks, and the incoming waves catch the last of the sun as they curl and dissolve into foam. Behind him, Monte Urgull rises from the sea in a dark, rounded mass, its wooded slopes glowing burnt umber where the light catches the hillside and deepening into near-black shadow on the sheltered side. A compact structure crowns the summit, small against the vast sky. Soft layers of green hills recede into the haze beyond, and a few loose clouds drift across a horizon that shifts from deep gold to pale cream. The whole scene has the quality of a moment held just before it fades.

The history & when to go

Monte Urgull has watched over San Sebastián for centuries. The hill served as a fortified position during multiple conflicts that shaped the region, and the walls and structures near its summit date back to periods of significant military history in the Basque Country. After its strategic role diminished, the headland became a public park, and its slopes have been open to walkers ever since. The views from its heights take in the full sweep of La Concha bay, the old town below, and the open Atlantic beyond.

The western face of the headland catches the richest evening light in late spring and summer, when the sun sets far enough north to flood the beach with the kind of glow this canvas captures so well.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of San Sebastian finds a home on your wall.
