About the view

Red Rock Coastal Cliffs PEI

The view sweeps along the base of Prince Edward Island's red rock coastal cliffs from a low vantage point near the waterline, placing you right where the Gulf of St. Lawrence rushes in. Towering warm-red bluffs dominate the left side of the composition, their deeply grooved faces catching full, bright sunlight that deepens their rust and burnt-sienna hues. Isolated sea stacks stand further along the shore, silhouetted against a vivid cobalt sky that stretches unbroken to the horizon. White foam churns across the russet sand in long, diagonal sweeps, pulling the eye from the foreground all the way back into the distance. The contrast — fiery earth tones against that bold, saturated blue — gives the scene an almost electric clarity.

The history & when to go

The cliffs of PEI's north shore are among the most distinctive coastal formations in Atlantic Canada, shaped by the relentless action of the Gulf of St. Lawrence over thousands of years. Erosion continues to sculpt the shoreline today, gradually shifting the positions of sea stacks and gradually receding cliff faces. The island's coastline is protected in part through Prince Edward Island National Park, established in 1937, which preserves significant stretches of this unique shoreline for future generations.

Late afternoon in summer brings the richest light to these cliffs, when the low sun intensifies the reds and the water shifts to deep indigo — exactly the mood captured here.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Prince Edward Island finds a home on your wall.
