About the view

Rock Islands Natural Arch

The view looks out from the calm water itself, framed on both sides by towering pale cliffs draped in dense, luminous green. A great natural arch spans the scene at center, its curved opening revealing a second cluster of jungle-topped islets beyond, each reflected in the still lagoon below. The water shifts from deep teal near the cliffs to a translucent, glowing aquamarine in the open channel, and a diffused midday light floods down through the gap in the rock. Small kayaks in flashes of red, blue and yellow dot the middle distance, giving a sense of the immense scale of the Rock Islands Natural Arch and the extraordinary quiet of Palau's protected waters.

The history

The Rock Islands Southern Lagoon has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2012, honored for both its natural beauty and its cultural significance to the Palauan people. The arch itself is carved over an immense span of time by wave action and bioerosion eating into the base of the limestone. The surrounding lagoon shelters one of the richest coral ecosystems on the planet, and the area holds deep historical meaning as ancestral territory for indigenous Palauans.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Palau finds a home on your wall.
