About the view

Palau Jungle Waterfall

A wide curtain of white water spills evenly across the full width of the scene, tumbling into a calm, jade-green pool below. The view is taken from water level, looking straight into the fall's face, so the cascade fills nearly the entire canvas from edge to edge. Tall broad-leafed plants press in from both sides, their deep greens ranging from the bright, almost luminous fronds at the foreground to the darker, shadowed canopy behind. Light filters down from somewhere above the trees, catching the mist where it lifts off the surface and giving the falling water a cool silver-blue luminance. The pool beneath holds a soft turquoise stillness that contrasts quietly with the motion above it.

The history & when to go

Palau's interior forests are home to numerous waterfalls fed by the archipelago's high annual rainfall, many of them tucked within the jungle and reachable only on foot or by guided trail. The islands sit in the western Pacific and have been shaped over millennia by their isolation, developing ecosystems found nowhere else on earth. Palau has long been recognized internationally for the extraordinary richness of its natural environments, both marine and terrestrial, and parts of its land area are protected within national conservation zones.

The falls run fullest in the wet season, roughly May through October, when the rains are heavy and the jungle deepens to its most saturated green.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Palau finds a home on your wall.
