Badrulchau Stone Monoliths
Two tall dark stones loom close in the foreground, their weathered surfaces catching the full midday sun, while a dozen more rise from a vivid, almost electric-green meadow behind them. The view is taken from ground level, looking across the open field toward a dense wall of tall palms swaying under a bold cobalt sky scattered with soft white clouds. The contrast is striking — the stones are deep charcoal and umber, heavy and ancient, while everything around them pulses with saturated tropical color. Light falls hard and clean, casting short shadows that anchor each monolith firmly into the earth.
The history & when to go
The Badrulchau stone monoliths on Babeldaob, Palau's largest island, are among the most significant archaeological sites in Micronesia. The site holds more than 50 large stones arranged in rows, and researchers believe they date back at least 1,500 years. Local oral tradition associates the monoliths with gods who built a great meeting house on the site, lending them a spiritual significance that endures today. Their exact origin and the full purpose they served remain subjects of ongoing study.
The dry season, running roughly from November through April, offers the clearest skies and the most vivid contrast between the deep green landscape and the open blue above.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.
I hope a little piece of Palau finds a home on your wall.
