About the view

Okavango Delta Mokoro Safari

A poler stands at the stern of a narrow mokoro, his silhouette sharp against a sky that has dissolved into layers of rose, coral, and soft violet. Two passengers sit low in the boat ahead of him, facing the horizon as the craft glides through still water scattered with broad floating leaves and blooming pink flowers. Tall reeds line the banks on either side, fading to shadow, while a lone flat-topped tree breaks the skyline in the middle distance. The entire surface of the channel mirrors the burning sky above, doubling the warm pinks and mauves so that the boat seems to float between two sunsets. The Okavango Delta fills the canvas with a hush that you can almost feel.

The history & when to go

The mokoro — a traditional dugout canoe — has been the primary mode of travel through the delta's waterways for generations, used by the communities who have lived alongside these channels for centuries. Polers stand and navigate using long poles, reading the currents and the shallow beds by instinct and long practice. UNESCO inscribed the Okavango Delta as a World Heritage Site in 2014, recognising its extraordinary biodiversity.

The sunset hour, when the sky turns this particular shade of deep rose and the water goes glassy calm, is widely regarded as the most breathtaking time to be out on the channels.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Okavango Delta finds a home on your wall.
