Okavango Delta Elephant Crossing
The view looks straight down from high above the Delta, as though you are drifting in a small plane over one of the most alive places on earth. A wide blue channel winds through the center of the scene in long, generous curves, its surface catching the full brightness of a midday sky. On either side, the floodplains spread out in deep greens and warm golds, the grasses dense and low, broken here and there by clusters of tall, rounded trees casting soft dark shapes against the light. Midway through the frame, a herd of elephants wades through the channel, their grey forms clustered together where the water is widest, sending faint ripples across the blue. The palette is vivid but unhurried — cobalt above, jade and amber below, and that steady, generous equatorial light pressing down on everything.
The history & when to go
The Okavango Delta is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its exceptional ecological significance. Each year, floodwaters flowing from the Angolan highlands travel hundreds of kilometers before spreading across the flat sands of the Kalahari, creating one of the largest inland deltas in the world. The resulting mosaic of channels, islands and seasonal floodplains supports one of Africa's greatest concentrations of wildlife, along with a remarkable range of other species.
The dry season, roughly May through October, brings the annual flood to its peak and draws the greatest concentrations of animals to the water's edge — the best time to witness a crossing like this one for yourself.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.
I hope a little piece of Okavango Delta finds a home on your wall.
