Okavango Delta Elephant Crossing
Seen from high above, a herd of elephants winds its way through the shimmering channels of the Okavango Delta, their grey forms reflected in vivid cobalt water below. The view looks straight down over a mosaic of brilliant blue waterways and vivid green islands, each strip of land edged in deep gold where the grasses catch the midday sun. A bare, open-branched tree stands alone on one of the larger islands to the upper left, its silhouette stark against the amber floodplain. The herd stretches in a long, loose procession — larger adults at the front and rear, younger calves tucked in between — moving with a slow, unhurried confidence that makes the whole scene feel timeless.
The history & when to go
The Okavango is one of the few major rivers in the world that never reaches the sea. Rising in the highlands of Angola, it flows inland and spreads across northern Botswana, creating one of Africa's largest and most celebrated wetland ecosystems. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014, the delta supports extraordinary concentrations of elephants, among the largest remaining populations on the continent. Elephant herds are known to cross its channels regularly as the seasonal flood waters shift, following routes through the landscape that generations of animals have traveled before them.
The dry season, roughly June through October, brings the highest floodwaters and draws wildlife into dense, spectacular concentrations, making it the most rewarding time to witness crossings like this one firsthand.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.
I hope a little piece of Okavango Delta finds a home on your wall.
