About the view

Oaxacan Courtyard Fountain

A tiered fountain anchors the center of this sun-drenched courtyard, its warm golden basin catching the midday light as water shimmers in the shallow pool below. The view is level and close, as though you have just stepped through a doorway into the space. Arched openings in the amber-washed walls frame a lantern beyond, while tall palms and lush potted greenery press in from every side. Clusters of red blooms ring the fountain's base, and a cascade of vivid magenta flowers spills down the right wall, pulling the eye up and outward. The palette is unapologetically warm — ochre, terracotta, deep crimson and that particular electric pink that seems to belong entirely to Mexico.

The history & when to go

The traditional Mexican courtyard, or patio, traces its roots to both the indigenous and Spanish colonial traditions that shaped Oaxacan architecture. In colonial-era buildings across Oaxaca, the enclosed courtyard served as the quiet heart of the home or civic building — a private garden meant to provide shade, water and a sense of calm within thick surrounding walls. Fountains were a central feature, connecting the space to longstanding Moorish-influenced Spanish design. Today these courtyards remain a living part of daily life in the city, tucked behind the facades of homes, hotels and cultural institutions.

The courtyard gardens of Oaxaca come alive with color and bloom, the afternoon light softening to a long, honeyed glow.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Oaxaca finds a home on your wall.
