About the view

Monte Alban Zapotec Ruins

The view looks out across the great leveled summit of Monte Albán, where terraced platforms and stepped pyramids rise from an expanse of close-cropped green. Warm stone tiers catch the full weight of midday sun, their horizontal lines cutting bold geometry against the valley below. A broad-canopied tree anchors the left edge in deep, luminous green, pulling the eye toward the structures beyond. Behind them, the mountain ridges roll away in layered bands of cobalt and slate, their peaks catching faint traces of pale light at the horizon. The sky above is wide and clear, and the whole composition breathes with the particular stillness of a high place on a brilliant afternoon in Oaxaca.

The history & when to go

Monte Albán was founded around 500 BCE and grew into one of the earliest true cities in Mesoamerica. It served as the political and ceremonial capital of the Zapotec civilization for well over a thousand years, its hilltop position giving it command over the convergence of three valleys below. At its height the city held tens of thousands of people and supported monumental construction, complex governance, and a writing system. The site was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.

The light is richest in the morning and late afternoon, when the sun rakes low across the platforms and the mountain backdrop deepens toward indigo.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Oaxaca finds a home on your wall.
