About the view

Statue of Liberty Sunset

The Statue of Liberty rises at the heart of this scene, viewed from across the harbor's darkening water as sunset consumes the sky behind her. Warm coral bleeds upward into deep rose and then into wide bands of violet and blue, the swirling clouds catching every last frequency of fading light. The figure herself stands in cool silhouette, torch lifted, robes falling in gathered folds against that blazing backdrop. Her pedestal and the low mass of the island anchor the composition at the waterline, with the faint outline of a distant skyline just visible along the left horizon. The water below reflects the whole scene in muted, shifting tones of lavender and amber.

The history & when to go

France gifted the Statue of Liberty to the United States, and she was dedicated on October 28, 1886. Designed by sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, with her internal framework engineered by Gustave Eiffel, she was conceived as a symbol of friendship between the two nations and of shared democratic ideals. For the millions who arrived by ship in the decades that followed, she was the first landmark they saw as they entered New York Harbor.

Sunset on the harbor produces exactly this quality of light, and the hour just before dark offers the most dramatic color in the sky above the island.
