About the view

Central Park Gapstow Bridge

The view looks out across the still water of The Pond toward Gapstow Bridge in Central Park, its low warm-stone arch reflected almost perfectly in the glassy surface below. Flanking the bridge on every side, the canopy erupts in a full chorus of autumn color — deep scarlet on the left giving way to amber and burnt orange across the right, the branches threading together into a dense, glowing frame. Above the treeline, the cool gray towers of New York City rise through a pale overcast sky, their geometric edges a quiet counterpoint to the softness of the foliage. The whole composition pulls the eye through the arch and up into that silver distance, the water holding the warmth of the trees in a trembling mirror below.

The history & when to go

Gapstow Bridge was completed in 1896, replacing an earlier wooden crossing. Designed by Howard & Caudwell, it spans a narrow point at the northern tip of The Pond, one of several bodies of water Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux wove into their founding vision for the park. That vision took shape through the Greensward Plan, submitted in 1858, which shaped 843 acres of the island's center into the enduring landscape New Yorkers rely on today.

October and early November tend to bring peak color to this corner of the park, with the bridge and its reflection at their most vivid on calm, overcast mornings when the light is even and the water runs still.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of New York City finds a home on your wall.
