About the view

Manhattan Bridge DUMBO Brooklyn

The view opens from street level in DUMBO, looking straight up a cobblestone corridor toward the Manhattan Bridge as late golden light floods in from beyond its towers. Tall warm-brick buildings press in close on either side, their deep amber and rust tones deepening in shadow the closer they fall to the viewer, while the bridge itself dissolves into a luminous haze at the far end of the frame. The latticed arch and crisscrossing cables catch that hazy glow and seem almost to float above the street. A few small figures move through the middle distance, and leafy trees on the right edge soften the geometry with dabs of muted green. The palette is entirely autumnal — honey, rust, bronze and cream — with the bridge's ironwork rendered in warm grey against a pale, overexposed sky.

The history & when to go

The Manhattan Bridge connects Brooklyn to Chinatown in Manhattan, spanning the East River. It opened in 1909, making it slightly younger than its neighbor the Brooklyn Bridge, and it carries subway trains alongside road traffic and pedestrian walkways. The Washington Street view in DUMBO — this precise corridor framing the bridge's tower — has become one of the most recognizable vantage points in New York City.

The golden-hour light captured here is truest in autumn, when low afternoon sun pours directly down the street and the warm tones of the surrounding buildings seem to intensify alongside it.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of New York City finds a home on your wall.
