About the view

Menemsha Harbor Fishing Dock

The view stretches along the dock from water level, looking west toward a horizon swallowed in fire. The sun has just touched down at the far end of Menemsha Harbor, sending a broad band of molten gold across the calm water while the sky erupts in layers of deep coral, burnt orange, and rolling violet-edged clouds. A single white fishing boat rides quietly at the dock's edge, its tall mast a vertical line against all that luminous chaos above. To the left, weathered shingle-sided fish shacks line the boardwalk in a receding row, their warm-toned facades catching the last orange light, colorful buoys hanging in loose clusters from one of the doorways. The planked dock pulls the eye straight into the glow, making the whole scene feel like an invitation to walk toward the light.

The history & when to go

Menemsha has operated as a working fishing harbor for generations, and the docks along its inner channel remain active today, supplying fresh catch to the island and beyond. The village gained a wider audience after serving as a filming location for Jaws in 1975, though its character as a true commercial fishing port long predates that moment. The harbor is maintained in part by the town of Chilmark, and the fish houses lining the dock are among the most recognized images associated with Martha's Vineyard.

Sunset here draws islanders and visitors alike to the water's edge, and midsummer evenings, when the sky holds color longest, tend to produce the most dramatic displays.

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Martha's Vineyard finds a home on your wall.
