About the view

Edgartown Winter Street Scene

A snow-hushed street in Edgartown stretches toward a soft vanishing point at dusk, the whole scene held in that particular blue-violet hour when daylight has given up but the sky hasn't gone fully dark. White clapboard facades line both sides, their dark shutters crisp against the deep cobalt air. Warm amber light spills from every window, and a wreath of deep green hangs centered on a dark front door ahead, the single note of color that draws the eye down the composition. Street lanterns glow amber in the middle distance, their halos fading into fog as the lane curves gently away. Bare branches reach across the upper corners like ink strokes against the indigo sky, and the foreground snow lies in smooth, unbroken drifts cut by shallow tire tracks that only deepen the stillness.

The history & when to go

Edgartown was established in the seventeenth century and served for generations as a prosperous whaling port. The wealth that trade brought ashore shaped the streetscape visitors still find today: Federal and Greek Revival homes set close to the sidewalk, white fences defining orderly lots, a compact historic district that remains one of the best-preserved in New England. The town is the county seat of Dukes County and the oldest settlement on Martha's Vineyard.

Winter visits, from December through February, offer this scene almost exactly as it appears here — the streets quiet, the windows lit early, and snow settling without interruption over the whole town.

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Martha's Vineyard finds a home on your wall.
