About the view

Aguas Calientes Riverfront Town

A rushing river tumbles through the foreground, its pale blue-white water threading between smooth, rounded boulders slicked with spray. The view looks along the riverbank toward Aguas Calientes, where a row of multi-story buildings glows warm amber and coral against the gathering dusk — their lit windows and balconies reflected softly in the evening air. Deep green growth spills over the retaining walls and clings to every surface, while behind the town, enormous peaks rise almost vertically into a pale, cloud-streaked sky. The palette moves from cool lavender and teal in the water and shadows to the rich, welcoming warmth of the buildings on the right, with dense forest greens binding the whole scene together.

The history & when to go

Aguas Calientes — officially named Machupicchu Pueblo — grew as the primary gateway to the Inca citadel above, and the rail line connecting it to Cusco remains the main route into the valley. The town takes its name from the natural hot springs on its outskirts. It sits within the Machu Picchu Historic Sanctuary, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and serves as the last stop before visitors make the ascent to the ruins that put this remote Andean valley on the world's map.

The riverfront is especially atmospheric at dusk, when the mountain walls deepen to indigo and the town's warm lights come alive against the fading sky.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Machu Picchu finds a home on your wall.
