About the view

Machu Picchu Agricultural Terraces

The view sweeps down from a high ridge, looking across the great sweeping terraces of Machu Picchu as late golden light rakes across their stepped edges. Each curved tier catches the sun differently — some glowing a warm amber, others still dressed in vivid green — and the rhythmic arcs of warm stone walls draw the eye downward toward a cluster of ancient structures nestled at the slope's shoulder. Dense forest presses in on all sides, deep and blue-shadowed, while jagged peaks rise behind in the distance, their tips touched by a blush of pink and coral cloud. The composition feels both vast and intimate, the geometry of human effort set against something enormous and unhurried.

The history & when to go

The agricultural terraces at Machu Picchu were a remarkable feat of engineering. The Inca built them by cutting level platforms into steep mountain slopes, filling each one with layers of material to ensure drainage and fertile growing conditions. The terraces served both practical and ceremonial purposes, and they helped make the settlement largely self-sufficient despite its remote and elevated position. Machu Picchu was likely built during the reign of the Inca ruler Pachacuti in the fifteenth century and remained unknown to the wider world until Hiram Bingham brought it to international attention in 1911.

The terraces are at their most dramatic in the dry season, roughly May through October, when clear skies allow that long golden afternoon light to fall uninterrupted across every tier.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Machu Picchu finds a home on your wall.
