About the view

Komodo Island Sunset Anchorage

A lone outrigger rests in still, open water as the sun drops toward the horizon somewhere beyond a dark, tree-covered island silhouette at the center of the frame. The view looks out across a wide bay near Komodo Island, the sea surface holding the whole sky in a wash of amber, soft coral and faded gold. Above, layered clouds drift between peach and lavender, the brightest light concentrated low where the sun itself glows a deep yellow-orange. A second small island sits quietly to the right, and the faint blue outlines of distant hills fade into the haze. The outrigger in the foreground is rendered in cool shadow, its extended side floats and raised fittings forming a delicate silhouette that anchors the composition without disturbing the calm.

The history & when to go

Komodo Island is part of the national park of the same name, established in 1980 and later designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The island is most widely known as the natural habitat of the Komodo dragon, the world's largest living lizard, which can grow to around three meters in length. The park encompasses three major islands and numerous smaller ones, and its waters are recognized internationally for their exceptional marine biodiversity, drawing researchers and conservationists from around the world.

The golden hour before sunset produces this quality of light for only a brief window each evening, so arriving at the water's edge well beforehand gives the best chance of catching the full color shift.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Komodo Island finds a home on your wall.
