About the view

Komodo Dragon Savanna Resting

A Komodo dragon rests at the center of the scene, low and unhurried against the dry earth, its dark scaled body stretching across the foreground with quiet authority. The view looks out across Komodo Island's open savanna under warm afternoon light — golden grasses ripple in every direction, framed on the left by a broad-canopied tree and on the right by a tall, spiky-fronted palm. Beyond the grass, a band of deep green trees softens the middle distance before the land rises toward blue-hazed volcanic peaks. The palette moves from amber and ochre at ground level through layered greens to the pale sky above, giving the composition a layered, luminous depth.

The history & when to go

The Komodo dragon is the world's largest living lizard and is found only on a handful of Indonesian islands. Komodo National Park, which encompasses the island, was established in 1980 and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991, recognizing both the ecological rarity of the dragons and the surrounding marine environment. Adults can reach lengths of around three meters and are capable hunters, despite their seemingly languid resting posture.

The dry season, roughly April through October, brings the savanna to its most vivid gold and makes dragon sightings in the open grasslands most likely.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Komodo Island finds a home on your wall.
