About the view

Pink Beach Komodo Island

The view opens from beach level, looking along the wide, curving arc of Pink Beach on Komodo Island. The foreground is all warm blush sand, its rosy tone deepening where a shallow wave has just receded and left the surface wet. The water shifts from pale aquamarine at the shoreline to a richer turquoise further out, glassy and calm, carrying the reflected brightness of a midday sky. Rolling hills rise across the bay, their golden-dry slopes dotted with patches of deep green where low, spreading trees cluster near the water's edge. Billowing white clouds drift through a vivid cobalt blue above, and the whole composition has the unhurried clarity of a place bathed in equatorial light.

The history & when to go

Pink Beach sits within Komodo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site established in 1991 to protect both the remarkable terrestrial wildlife of the island and the extraordinarily rich marine ecosystem surrounding it. The park encompasses several islands and is home to the Komodo dragon, the world's largest living lizard species. The surrounding waters are considered among the most biodiverse on the planet, and the reef systems here draw researchers and conservationists from around the world.

The beach is most luminous in the late morning, when the sun is high enough to illuminate the shallow water but the light has not yet bleached the sand of its characteristic rose tone.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Komodo Island finds a home on your wall.
