About the view

Thu Bon River Lantern Boats

The view looks down the length of the Thu Bon River at dusk, with the old town of Hoi An glowing warmly along the right bank and a long corridor of tall, lush trees lining the left. A dozen small wooden boats drift across the deep teal water, each one lit with clusters of round lanterns in rose, amber, and soft white — their colors bleeding into trembling reflections below. The sky overhead shifts from a pale gold at the horizon to a wash of lilac and dusty pink, with gentle blue hills rolling into the distance. The whole scene sits in that suspended moment between day and night when every surface catches the last warmth of the sun.

The history & when to go

The Thu Bon River has been the lifeblood of Hoi An for centuries, carrying merchants and their goods through a port that once connected Southeast Asia to trade routes reaching as far as China and Japan. The lantern boat tradition on the river is closely tied to the monthly full-moon festival, during which electric lights are dimmed across the old town and candle-lit paper lanterns are released onto the water as offerings and symbols of good fortune. Hoi An's Ancient Town was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999, recognized for its remarkably well-preserved trading port architecture.

The lanterns appear every evening, but the full-moon festival — held on the fourteenth day of each lunar month — is when the river truly comes alive.

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.
