About the view

Hoi An Ancient Town Street

A lone figure walks the center of a quiet lane in Hoi An Ancient Town, a traditional conical hat tilted against the midday glow, two baskets balanced on a shoulder pole swaying with each step. The view stretches down a gently curving street flanked by warm amber and ochre facades, their shuttered upper balconies draped in deep shadow beneath a clear cerulean sky. Overhead, rows of round orange lanterns thread from building to building like strung suns, their glow doubling the heat of the scene even in stillness. Bursts of vivid magenta blooms press forward from the right, and lush green canopies break the gold with cool relief. The light is full and joyful, the palette loud yet somehow tender.

The history & when to go

Hoi An Ancient Town was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999, acknowledged as one of the best-preserved examples of a Southeast Asian trading port from the fifteenth to the nineteenth century. At its height the town drew merchants from China, Japan, Portugal, and the Netherlands, each leaving architectural traces still visible in the streets today. The iconic silk lanterns that now define the town's image have roots in that long merchant history, and they remain handcrafted by local families using techniques passed down through generations.

The street comes alive most memorably on the evenings of the full moon each month, when electric lights are turned off and lanterns alone illuminate the old quarter.

This watercolor study of a Hoi An lantern-strung street glows with amber, fuchsia, and soft cerulean in a mood of timeless, unhurried grace.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Hoi An finds a home on your wall.
