Hoi An Ancient Town Street
A lone cyclist drifts along one of Hoi An Ancient Town's warm amber streets in the golden hour before dusk. Seen at street level, the view stretches along a low façade washed in deep ochre and burnt gold, its tiled roofline strung with a row of silk lanterns in scarlet, tangerine, jade, and cobalt that glow like embers against a pale blue sky. To the left, a cascade of vivid magenta blooms spills over the rooftop, and leafy potted plants cluster near the doorway. At the centre of it all, a figure in a coral shirt and a conical hat pedals unhurriedly past, a small basket fixed to the front of the bicycle — a single human detail that anchors the whole luminous scene.
The history & when to go
Hoi An's Ancient Town earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 1999, recognised for its exceptionally well-preserved trading port architecture reflecting the cultural crossroads of centuries of commerce. From roughly the 15th century onward, merchants from across Asia and beyond settled here, and the layered architectural legacy of those communities — visible in the covered bridge, merchant houses, and assembly halls — has survived largely intact, making the Ancient Town one of the most complete historic urban ensembles in Southeast Asia.
Late afternoon is the finest time to experience this street in person, when the low sun turns every ochre wall to liquid gold and the lanterns begin their gentle sway in the river breeze.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.
I hope a little piece of Hoi An finds a home on your wall.
