About the view

Hakone Lake Ashi Torii Gate

A vermillion torii gate rises from the still water of Lake Ashi, its twin columns and curved crossbeam blazing against a sky of deep, luminous blue. The view looks across the open lake toward a forested hillside, its dense canopy a rich, layered green that sweeps right to the water's edge. Beyond the ridge, the snow-capped silhouette of Mount Fuji floats between clouds on the left horizon, vast and unhurried. The gate's reflection trembles in the water below it, doubling the red into something almost molten. Light falls clean and bright across the whole scene, giving the composition a clarity that feels more like memory than midday.

The history & when to go

The torii standing in Lake Ashi belongs to Hakone Shrine, a Shinto shrine whose origins reach back to the eighth century. Torii gates in Shinto tradition mark the threshold between the everyday world and sacred space, and one placed in water carries that boundary across the lake itself, greeting those who arrive by boat. Hakone Shrine has been a place of pilgrimage and regional significance for well over a thousand years, drawing worshippers, feudal lords, and travelers along the old Tokaido road alike.

Clear mornings in autumn and winter offer the sharpest views of Mount Fuji framed behind the gate, when the air is driest and the mountain's outline is most defined.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Hakone finds a home on your wall.
