About the view

Hakone Garden Stepping Stones Waterfall

Slender threads of white water spill down through a dense canopy of layered greens, landing in a pool so still and clear it holds the whole forest above it. The view draws the eye along a curved path of flat, rounded stepping stones that cross the water from the near bank toward the falls, each stone dusted with soft moss and framed by larger boulders wearing cushions of the same deep green. Light filters in from somewhere beyond the treetops, catching the mist where the cascade meets the surface and turning the water an almost luminous jade. The composition moves with quiet intention — from the mossy stones at the foreground, across that serene expanse of color, up to where the falls dissolve into foliage.

The history & when to go

Hakone Garden reflects a tradition of Japanese garden design that prizes the careful framing of natural elements. Stepping stone paths — known in Japanese garden tradition as tobi-ishi — are a long-established feature, guiding visitors slowly and deliberately through a landscape so that each step becomes an act of attention rather than simply movement toward a destination.

Late spring and early summer bring the freshest greens to these gardens, when new growth deepens the canopy and water levels keep the falls full and bright.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Hakone finds a home on your wall.
