About the view

Lake Ashi Pirate Ship

From the right edge of the scene, a cascade of soft pink blossoms frames the view like a natural border, their delicate clusters catching the midday light. The deep cobalt of Lake Ashi stretches across the center, where a tall-masted wooden vessel in warm amber and burnt orange glides across the water, its rigging sharp against the sky. Beyond it, forested ridgelines roll in deep greens toward the left, and above them all, Mount Fuji rises in pale blue and white, its snow-dusted cone perfectly symmetrical beneath a bright, cloud-scattered sky. The composition pulls the eye from blossom to boat to summit in one long, unhurried sweep.

The history & when to go

The sightseeing vessels that cross Lake Ashi have been a fixture of Hakone tourism for decades, designed to recall the tall ships of earlier centuries. The lake itself formed in the caldera of the Hakone volcano and sits at roughly 723 meters above sea level. A lakeside torii gate, part of a Shinto shrine whose origins stretch back over a thousand years, stands along the southern shore and has become one of the most recognized images associated with the region.

Late March through early April, when the blossoms along the shore reach full bloom and Fuji's cap is still snow-white, is widely considered the finest time to make this crossing in person.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Hakone finds a home on your wall.
