About the view

Vuong Family Palace Courtyard

The view looks down into the enclosed courtyard of the Vuong Family Palace, framed on three sides by sweeping low rooflines whose curved tiles ripple outward in layered waves of grey and dusty violet. Warm amber light catches the older wing to the left, turning its worn walls a deep ochre gold, while the central hall ahead sits in cooler shadow beneath its heavier, darker roof. A single Vietnamese flag, vivid red with a gold star, rises from the courtyard's centre, its color the most saturated note in the whole composition. Beyond the rooflines, tall pines press close against a pale sky, their soft blue-green canopy softening the edges of the scene and lending it an almost hushed, enclosed quality.

The history & when to go

The Vuong Family Palace in Dong Van was built in the late nineteenth century as the residence of the Vuong clan, who held significant influence over the local opium trade and governed much of the Hmong highland population in the region. Construction drew on the skills of craftsmen from Yunnan, China, and local Hmong builders, resulting in a compound that blends Chinese architectural traditions with local highland building practices. The palace remained in the Vuong family for decades before passing into state care, and it is now recognized as a national historical site.

Early morning light fills the courtyard most gently, before the surrounding pines cast deep shade over the tiled wings.
