About the view

Ma Pi Leng Pass Switchbacks

The view opens from high above, looking down along a valley that narrows like a funnel toward a blazing horizon. The sun sits low between two steep ridges in Ha Giang, pouring gold and amber across the sky while softer bands of rose and lavender spread outward into the clouds. In the foreground, warm flat rocks catch the last pink light, and small wildflowers push up beside them in clusters of deep magenta. Below, the switchbacks of Ma Pi Leng Pass coil back on themselves again and again, a pale ribbon looping through saturated green slopes before the valley swallows the road entirely. The distant ranges fade into blue-grey layers of haze, each ridge paler than the one before it.

The history & when to go

Ma Pi Leng Pass is widely considered one of the most dramatic mountain roads in Vietnam. Completed in the mid-1960s, it was built almost entirely by hand over the course of several years by workers from local ethnic minority communities. The road traverses the edge of a deep gorge carved by the Nho Que River, climbing to roughly 1,500 metres above sea level and connecting the town of Dong Van to Meo Vac. The pass falls within the Dong Van Karst Plateau Geopark, which holds UNESCO Global Geopark status.

Sunrise and the hour just before it tend to produce the richest light along this stretch, when low mist still clings to the gorge and the ridgelines glow before the full day arrives.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Ha Giang Loop finds a home on your wall.
