About the view

Kicker Rock San Cristobal

Three jagged towers of warm stone rise straight from a churning Pacific, lit from the side in a blaze of amber and deep rust that makes the rock seem to glow from within. The view is taken from the water, close enough that white foam curls into the foreground and the ocean fills the canvas in layered bands of cobalt and teal. Two larger formations flank a narrower central spire, their sheer faces catching the low golden light while their shadowed sides fall into cool charcoal. Soft pink clouds drift above the scene, their colors echoing the warm tones of the rock faces below and giving the whole composition a balance that feels almost theatrical. This watercolor-style canvas captures Kicker Rock off San Cristobal at its most dramatic hour.

The history & when to go

Kicker Rock, known in Spanish as León Dormido, is one of the most recognized natural landmarks in the Galápagos archipelago. It formed from the remnants of an ancient volcanic cone, eroded over thousands of years by wind and sea. A narrow channel between the two main formations is a well-documented dive and snorkel site, where strong currents draw an extraordinary concentration of marine life.

The golden-hour light that defines this scene is at its richest in the dry season, roughly June through November, when the approach by boat is especially rewarding.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Galapagos Islands finds a home on your wall.
