About the view

Bartolome Island Pinnacle Rock

The view sweeps out from high on Bartolome Island's summit, looking down across two shallow bays that curve inward on either side of a narrow isthmus. Their waters shift from electric turquoise on the left to deeper cobalt on the right, separated by a pale crescent of sand and a low patch of vivid green. To the right, Pinnacle Rock rises sharply from the waterline — a dark, angular spire catching midday light against an open sky of bright white cloud. Beyond it, the bare volcanic cones of neighboring islands recede in layers of rust, copper and slate toward the horizon.

The history & when to go

Bartolome Island is one of the younger islands in the Galapagos archipelago and among the most visited viewpoints in the chain. The summit trail was developed as a boardwalk and staircase, climbing roughly 114 meters, to protect the fragile volcanic terrain underfoot. Pinnacle Rock is a remnant of an eroded volcanic plug, shaped over centuries by wave action and wind. The Galapagos Islands became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978, and Bartolome has long been central to the scientific legacy that began with Charles Darwin's visit to the archipelago in 1835.

Early morning is the quietest time to make the climb, when the bays below hold a glassy calm and the water colors are at their most vivid.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Galapagos Islands finds a home on your wall.
