About the view

Copper Canyon Waterfall Cliffs

A single ribbon of white water drops from an immense warm-toned cliff face, plunging so far that it dissolves into rising mist before it ever reaches the canyon floor. This view of the Copper Canyon waterfall looks outward across a vast gorge, framed on either side by rounded rust-colored boulders in the foreground and dense green canopy spilling down the steep walls beyond. The cliffs themselves are striated in deep terracotta and copper, streaked with shadow where the rock folds inward, while low cloud clings to the upper reaches and softens the sky into pale grey and ivory. The composition pulls the eye straight down that luminous white plume, then lets it wander into the layered greens and the humid haze gathered at the base.

The history & when to go

Copper Canyon sits within Chihuahua state and is home to the Rarámuri people, one of Mexico's indigenous communities, who have lived in and around these gorges for centuries. The canyon system was shaped over millennia by river erosion cutting through the volcanic plateau of the Sierra Madre Occidental, and the railway line completed through the region in 1961 remains one of the most celebrated scenic rail journeys in the Americas.

The waterfall runs strongest in the summer wet season, roughly July through September, when seasonal rains fill the high canyon streams and the surrounding forest deepens to an almost electric green.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Copper Canyon finds a home on your wall.
